MARINA BITU
Fuxico dress by Marina Bitu
In collaboration with artisans from the state of Ceará
Summer 2024
Fuxico
Banana fibre
With the support of Senac Ceará, Marina Bitu is spreading cultural knowledge about the Cariri region in the state of Ceará and exploring new forms of craftsmanship. Working with the 20 artisans of the Fibrarte Association, this dress is made from the ‘fluffy’ straw of the banana tree stem inspired by the ancestral technique of fuxico, which originated in Africa and is popular in the Northeast of Brazil. The straw is sewn into circular shapes, creating unique pieces through the artisanal process. The women of Fibrarte use banana crop residues to generate income by making decorative items, clothing and accessories.
