Celina Hissa focuses her practice on the supply chain in Ceará, the state where she lives and works. More than 300 women in 31 communities work with crochet, lace, macramé, carnauba straw, marquetry and woodcraft. Projects such as Carnaúba, Uma Conversa Sincera, Artesanais, Olê Rendeiras, Fio Oficina, and Travessias have increased the income of artisans by up to seven times.
The Mandacaru dress takes 60 days to put together the fillet lace and crochet. The Cobogó earrings are made from a type of straw that is typical of the Ceara region. The straw is harvested from a palm tree known as the ‘carnaúba’ or the ‘tree of life’ as everything from it can be used in some way.
